Scattered among them, broken doll arms and legs. Stacked silkscreen frames leaning against the walls, and plastic containers of paint almost everywhere, their fluorescent pigments casting a distinctive glow across the studio.

“Organised chaos” is how Phebe and Abigail Cameron describe the atmosphere of their studio in South East London.

The artists are more than sisters. As identical twins, they form the duo The Cameron Twins. Although their collaboration officially began in 2021, in many ways it has been ongoing since childhood. One of the earliest works they remember creating together was a series of large chalk drawings made outdoors — an immersive yet ephemeral work of art.

“The experience of building interactive worlds through collaboration remains a central part of how we work today.”

Each work is created side by side, in a fluid and dynamic process without fixed roles. The London-based artists are equally difficult to confine to a single medium. They have created installations and sculptures, yet feel especially drawn to silkscreen printing.

“The focus on layering and multiplication has a strong connection to our identity as twins and as a collaborative duo. Vivid colour is central to our visual language.”

Across their work, themes such as childhood memories, nostalgia, identity and duplication appear in playful repetition. Shared references — drawings, family photographs, and keepsakes with personal histories, often marked by signs of use — are woven into their imagery. The result is a world of emotional depth and flashes of dark humour.

Soon, an entirely new medium may be added to the Cameron Twins’ practice: a scarf in soft cashmere.

“It would be something very special for our work to exist in such a tangible, intimate form. The material is associated with comfort and care, which resonates with the way our artworks engage with nostalgia and the healing of the inner child.”

A New Medium
